More than enough is too much. Anon

Just check your wardrobe and see how many of those clothes have not ever been used in years and yet occupy a lot of space in your cupboard. Check out the unused things lying in the attic or the numerous odds and end that one has carefully hoarded in the fond hope of using it some time. If one were to cross the heart and honestly answer the question do I really need all these the answer would be a resounding ‘NO’. Yet almost every one of us is guilty of this compulsive urge to store/ hoard/ gather more than what we ever need and then we realize that more than enough  is too much.

Take another scenario where each one of us is shamelessly guilty; over eating at a buffet. We pile up our plate with food and eat greedily only to soon discover that we have taken more than what we really need and so we end up eating much more than what we want. If something is given free we would like to have more of it too despite knowing that we are entitled to just one. All these situations simply underscore the reality that each of us is greedy in varying degrees and this despite realizing the fact that more than what we need actually becomes too much.

Much  of our craving and hording stems from a variety of psychological needs be it fear of losing out on a freebie to wanting to extract the last penny of the price paid for the object. There are quite a few who are misers and compulsively hoard while others have an innate need to stack up so as to never feel they are have nots. Ladies for example have a fetish for both jewelry and footwear; while the former could be looked at charitably as a long term investment, the later is dismissed by many as am indulgence for their passion. Whichever way one looks at it, it still is more than enough that become too much.

Hoarding is not just the only example of how we acquire things that are too much for our real needs. The huge big screen TV in a the small drawing room, the triple door fridge in the cubbyhole called a kitchen and a slew of electronic gadgets including various models of music systems, computers and mobile phones stand mute testimony to our fear of discarding the obsolete because it still works. To really appreciate that too much is really counterproductive simply remember the last time you suffered from indigestion because of over eating or visualize the irritation, frustration and anger that crept into your system when you had to rummage through piles of useless stuff to locate what you really wanted.  If that still does not make sense, then it will be extremely tough for you to really understand that more than enough is too much.

Perhaps by now you are willing to give up reading this because every para here ends with nearly the same words and there is an overdose of More than enough is too much; is it too much to digest and are you now willing to concede that More than enough is too much?

Remember: “We are not cisterns made for hoarding, we are channels made for sharing.”  Billy Graham

Try this:

  1. Over the week end, try to do a spring cleaning and see how much of useless stuff you have managed to clear out. Also pay attention to how much of stuff you have retained which you really don’t need but you find it difficult to part with it.
  2. ( Here is another way of looking at the quote More than enough is too much) If you are accused of nagging, pause a moment and decide to really check for yourself about the frivolous complaints you make, the unwarranted criticisms and your penchant for fault finding. If your children accuse you of always peering over their shoulders ask yourself how often you use the word ‘‘Don’t do’  and how frequently you direct them to “Do this” and “Do that”.  Make a resolve to use more terms that are suggestive in nature like ‘ Can you ‘, ‘Can we’, ‘Let us try to’ etc.
