The will of God will not take you where the grace of God cannot keep you. Anon

For any of us, prayer is actually less about thanks for the gifts from the almighty but more about seeking favors. While this in itself is excusable as a human folly, what belies wisdom and rational is the bitterness with which many of us complaint that our wishes were not granted. If only we realized that God always showers his graces in good measure, giving everyone his due and enough to ensure that the graces can be well utilized and not squandered.

True grace from the almighty is in the happiness we have within us. Unfortunately, the human mind equates grace with material wealth, riches and luxuries, rarely pausing to think that it is in good health, a happy family and in peace of mind that the real grace of God rests. In fact because you don’t have everything that you crave for today, you still can look forward to tomorrow as there is a possibility of getting what you want. Then tomorrow will be an even happier day than today. More importantly, it would dawn on us that what ever blessings we get, help us be grounded to reality, connect us with the divine and temper our lives. It is when we crave for excessively more, that we stray from the right path, grope in the darkness of elusive happiness and seek comfort in pleasures of vice.

The real message when we don’t get our wants is – thou cannot digest more than what you are blessed with, so enjoy what you have and share it with your brethren. If you have suffered from indigestion caused by overeating, it will give you a sense of the feeling that overcomes you when you are greedy and indiscreet. Hunger, poverty and disease around the world are not God’s retribution to those societies or people but a reminder from God to the better off to share their graces and to the poor that they will be granted even more riches in his heavenly kingdom.

Remember: Grace is what God gives us when we don’t deserve and mercy is when God doesn’t give us what we do deserve

Try these:

  1. Make a list of graces that you are most grateful for ( see that the list has at least 10 items and don’t limit yourself). Now if you were asked to sacrifice 2 of the graces, what will you willing give up? Will you be prepared to sacrifice your gift of eye sight in return for the gift of fame/riches?
  2. What are those graces that you have, which you will use to help the less fortunate, the poor and the sick? Can you make a commitment to yourself to use your talents and graces for a cause every week? How much of yourself –not your wealth can you spare for the upliftment of the needy and the marginalized? Can you attempt to empathize with them and spend time with them understanding their needs and requirements?
  3. I complained because I had not shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet ! Analyze this statement and jot down the learning’s from it. Does this mean that the man with no feet is less happier than me? What is it that makes the people who are physically challenged live with dignity, hope and happiness?
